New and Improved

Over the past few months we've been busy working on a few updates around here.  While some are purely cosmetic, many of them are going to make things much easier for you, our valued customers.  We're especially proud of our DIY website adjustments.  We have a new platform, a whole new (and easier than ever) check-out system, and a newly streamlined look.  Check it out

Learning About Leather

Have you ever bought a piece of furniture made of "real wood" just to find that it was actually a cheaply made mass of particle board? Or maybe you saw wood grain and later realized that it was just a veneer? Well, leather is a lot like wood. There are four main grades of leather and unless you know what you're looking for, you can end up with a product that doesn't match your expectations. We...

New York Winter

It's another cold day here in upstate New York.  The temperature was in the single digits when I went out to capture the view this morning.  New York winters are cold, and long, and sometimes really hard, but they're beautiful too.

leather shoes travel

To the good people at Aurora Shoe Company,

I'm happy to report that my New Chinese shoes enjoyed a trip to India! I thought I would share a couple of photos of the shoes in action. The first, taking a drawing break at the Ellora Caves, and the second, climbing up to Leh Palace at roughly 11,500 feet in the magical city of Leh. The Vibram soles came in handy!

My thanks for a...

Small, Local, Handmade Gift Guide: JEWELRY

I asked my friend Jasmine Crowe to put together a small, local, and handmade jewelry gift guide for us.  Jasmine lives in Upstate New York with her husband, who farms, and her two adorable young children.  You can find her beautiful pottery (and now jewelry, too) at Jasmine Pots on Etsy.

Small, Local, Handmade Gift Guide: Tea

I come from a long line of tea drinking women, and think that early winter is the perfect time to stock up on new teas.  If you have a tea loving friend or relative, you might want to consider one of these tea themed gifts...

Small, Local Handmade Gift Guide: Hand Knits

There's a reason I'm starting with the knit gifts - those who take their knitting seriously know that holiday knitting begins in July.  BUT... those of us who have waited until after Thanksgiving for the holiday "inspiration" (read: pressure) to strike, still have plenty of gift-worthy options to consider.

For example...

Meet the Neighbors: Unite Two Design

At the Aurora Shoe Company, we passionately support small business and handmade and local goods. As a visitor of our blog, we thought that you might feel the same way. In our Meet the Neighbors series we're featuring businesses and people who reflect our own values and whom we feel lucky to call neighbors and friends.

It was a real treat to visit the gallery and workshop belonging to Keith and...

We're on Etsy's Home Page!

We are always flattered to be included in Etsy treasuries.  It's so much fun to see the different ways that fellow artisans put looks and ideas together.  From furniture to jewelry, we get paired with a lot and we love the different combinations.

With that being said, I did not expect to see our shoes front and center on the Etsy home page when I visited the site on a whim tonight. I was planning...

Suggestions Welcomed

Dave is loving his new Adler.  It can handle several layers of leather and opens the door for all kinds of accessories.   Belts and wallets are some initial thoughts.  We'd love to know, what kinds of leather accessories would you like to see?

A Letter Worth Sharing

Dave shared this sweet message on our Facebook page today and I wanted to share it here as well.  These are the kinds of letters that reaffirm everything we do.  Thank you to Julie, and everyone else who takes a moment to write.  We appreciate letters like this so much.

Hi there -

NorthernGRADE Photos

northerngrade men's made in usa

Dave and Andrea have had a great weekend at NorthernGRADE, the 100% American Made pop-up market in Minneapolis.  Dave has been uploading photos to our Facebook page throughout the weekend.  It looks like an amazing venue and a really inspiring group of vendors.  Take a peek!

Sadly Sitting This One Out

I should be in my car, heading north to New Hampshire for the Squam Art Fairright now, but I'm not. We were invited sometime mid-summer, well after I signed on to start a new teaching job, and I really should have known better than to plan a big family trip following the first real week of school. I have been known to let my enthusiasm trump my good sense, and this is yet another example of how...

The Dos and Don'ts of Foot Tracings

If you know anything about our shoes, or about full grain leather for that matter, then you know that it's all about creating a custom fit.  We spring for the top grade leather because it performs like nothing else can.  When sized properly, our shoes mold to their wearers' feet like a glove and become incredibly comfortable.  It's all great, except...

Birds of A Feather: Assembly

We find inspiration in other businesses and organizations who, like us, work to promote a love of good design and an appreciation for fine craftsmanship.  In this series, which we call Birds of a Feather, we'll share stories and ideas from around the world that reflect our own values.  We hope that you find them as inspiring and thought provoking as we do.

NorthernGRADE

We were thrilled to be selected as a vendor at the exclusive NorthernGRADE menswear pop-up market.   The market features only 100% made in the USA menswear and seems like a perfect fit for our American (sourced and made) shoes.

Dave and his wife Andrea will be heading out to Minneapolis for the market in mid September and they'd love to see you there.

A Harvest Supper

After months of discussion and a little bit of planning, Dave and his wife, Andrea, hosted a relaxed dinner party for a handful of like minded local friends.  We celebrated a highly anticipated wine release and talked about the challenges of running small businesses in our small, rural town (spotty and inconsistent internet coverage being the main complaint!).

While Dave and Andrea provided a...
