Meet the Neighbors: Second Story Rose

At the Aurora Shoe Company, we passionately support small business and handmade and local goods. As a visitor of our blog, we thought that you might feel the same way. In our Meet the Neighbors series we're featuring businesses and people who reflect our own values and whom we feel lucky to call neighbors and friends.

We live and work in a teensy little town, so every time something more...

Classic Styling and our Chinese Style

One of our most versatile styles for women, the Chinese is based on a Chinese dance slipper.  Featuring a rounded toe, adjustable strap, and minimal stitching, this shoe is as stylish as it is comfortable.  When I'm heading out the door and want to look a little bit more put together, I slip these on knowing that I can do anything and go anywhere without giving my feet a second thought.

These...

Local Author Visit

It was a real pleasure to get together with local author, and fellow maker, Maya Pagan Donenfeld.  We gave Maya a shop tour, and talked about her new book, which offers up some really inspirational advice for creating a new self identity after crisis, trauma, or loss.  It's called Hope Make Heal; 20 Crafts to Mend the Heart and would make a wonderful gift for a friend or for one's self. Maya's...

Lake Views

We're surrounded by beauty here in Aurora.  I think we all spend as much time as possible on or near the lake all summer, but mild winter days can be pretty great, too.  The geese were making lots of noise and the waves were calmly rolling in while we took a few photos this morning.

Hot coffee was a nice treat after an hour spent in the cold. Our Auroras have stayed pretty local this year. Where...

Classic Black

Our shoes may have an organic look and feel, but they can easily dress up and look sharp.  Here are our Middle English and New Mexican looking ready for just about anything.

Brown or Olive?

It can be hard to tell the difference between our brown and olive leather online.  To be honest, in certain lighting it can be hard to tell in person, too.  Where brown is a warm color, olive is cool.  It's the color of tree bark, and wet driftwood, very natural.  These photos feature our Middle English in Oliveand they're the perfect neutral color for someone with an olive skin tone. My friend,

Fashion Revolution

Yesterday was Fashion Revolution Day, and though we didn't know it at the time, people all over the world were posting pictures of their clothing, tagging their makers, and asking "where was this made?".  We didn't get called out, but we'd love to show you anyway.  This shop, this small structure, in this little town, surrounded by farms, corn fields and a few grape vines, this is whereyour shoes...

Birds of a Feather: Nukumori Designs

It's the end of March.  Spring has officially begun, but here in upstate New York, I think we all feel like we're stuck in a never-ending winter.  Boston may have gotten more snow, but we have had a very long, very cold, and very home-bound winter.

So.

When these super cozy baby-wearing coats from Nukumori Designscame in the mail, and we had a sunny day to work with, we got over the idea of waiting...

Winter Sun

Living in upstate New York requires an open mind and lots of layers.  Summers are hot and muggy, thanks to the beautiful lakes that surround us on all sides, and it's common to see snow on Halloween and then rain on Christmas.  We thaw out around March, but April can sometimes bring a snow that covers everything but the pretty little daffodils.  You just never know...

A few weeks ago, after plenty...

On Location at Ledyard Farms

Today was the perfect day to get out into the snow and take a few photos.  Carrie and I met up at Ledyard Farms where we were able to meet Ledyard's Tiger Lily, a 4-year-old Morgan show horse. The farm is one of our favorite spots for picking up local eggs, lamb and beef.  It also happens to be really pretty in the snow...

Flax + Leather =

Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can get away with doing something super fun and legitimately calling it work.  These photos document a day I like to think of as "Playing Dress-up with Friends".  Ever since our magazine feature, I've been wanting to put together some photos to highlight one of my favorite local shops, a Flax, linen, etc. consignment shop called Dinosaur Dry Goods. My friend, Bird,...

Featured in Central New York Magazine

Back in July we did some scrambling to get ready for a day-long interview and photo shoot with a local magazine. The issue made it to stands this month and we're loving the way that journalist, Allison Sklaney, and photographer, Ellen Blalock took our raw material and turned it into a really nice story about who we are and what we do. Locals might like to pick up a copy of Central New York...

Sustainable Heat

alternative energy, burning wood, sustainable aurora shoe co.

Up here in the Northeast, we have been slogging through an especially cold and snowy winter.  Most (if not all) of January was spent trying to keep our driveways clear and our homes warm (enough) in sub-freezing temperatures.  Many of us heat with wood so the staying warm part is a lot more involved than turning up the thermostat and paying the fuel bill.

A couple of years ago, Dave bought a high...

Introducing Caleb

Caleb grew up on a local farm and says that when he came in a couple of years ago to pick up a re-soled pair of shoes, he mentioned that he'd be interested in working here.  Given Maggie's retirement and an uptick in production, Dave gave him a call over the summer and asked if the interest was still there.  Thankfully, it was.  Caleb finished up the harvest season at our favorite local CSA, and...

Boots

We've had a lot of questions about our boots and when they'll be available. We had originally planned (hoped) for a fall 2013 release, but to be honest, we're not quite ready yet. It's taken a lot of time and figuring to prototype, test, and manufacture a shoe that has the look, and more importantly, the comfort that we're going for. We feel that we owe you, our loyal customers, a pair of boots...

Happy Birthday, Dave!

For those who don't have the pleasure of knowing my brother, here are a few things you might like to learn about the Birthday Boy, leader of this company...

1. He bought his first pair of Aurora Shoes when he was 13 and wore them everywhere. In the lake, bailing hay, to church, for weddings, EVERYWHERE. I think his toes actually busted out of the tips before he'd admit that his feet had grown...

New and Improved

Over the past few months we've been busy working on a few updates around here.  While some are purely cosmetic, many of them are going to make things much easier for you, our valued customers.  We're especially proud of our DIY website adjustments.  We have a new platform, a whole new (and easier than ever) check-out system, and a newly streamlined look.  Check it out

Learning About Leather

Have you ever bought a piece of furniture made of "real wood" just to find that it was actually a cheaply made mass of particle board? Or maybe you saw wood grain and later realized that it was just a veneer? Well, leather is a lot like wood. There are four main grades of leather and unless you know what you're looking for, you can end up with a product that doesn't match your expectations. We...

New York Winter

It's another cold day here in upstate New York.  The temperature was in the single digits when I went out to capture the view this morning.  New York winters are cold, and long, and sometimes really hard, but they're beautiful too.

Suggestions Welcomed

Dave is loving his new Adler.  It can handle several layers of leather and opens the door for all kinds of accessories.   Belts and wallets are some initial thoughts.  We'd love to know, what kinds of leather accessories would you like to see?
