Meet the Neighbors: Second Story Rose

At the Aurora Shoe Company, we passionately support small business and handmade and local goods. As a visitor of our blog, we thought that you might feel the same way. In our Meet the Neighbors series we're featuring businesses and people who reflect our own values and whom we feel lucky to call neighbors and friends.

We live and work in a teensy little town, so every time something more...

Lake Views

We're surrounded by beauty here in Aurora.  I think we all spend as much time as possible on or near the lake all summer, but mild winter days can be pretty great, too.  The geese were making lots of noise and the waves were calmly rolling in while we took a few photos this morning.

Hot coffee was a nice treat after an hour spent in the cold. Our Auroras have stayed pretty local this year. Where...

Birds of a Feather: Nukumori Designs

It's the end of March.  Spring has officially begun, but here in upstate New York, I think we all feel like we're stuck in a never-ending winter.  Boston may have gotten more snow, but we have had a very long, very cold, and very home-bound winter.

So.

When these super cozy baby-wearing coats from Nukumori Designscame in the mail, and we had a sunny day to work with, we got over the idea of waiting...

Winter Sun

Living in upstate New York requires an open mind and lots of layers.  Summers are hot and muggy, thanks to the beautiful lakes that surround us on all sides, and it's common to see snow on Halloween and then rain on Christmas.  We thaw out around March, but April can sometimes bring a snow that covers everything but the pretty little daffodils.  You just never know...

Flax + Leather =

Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can get away with doing something super fun and legitimately calling it work.  These photos document a day I like to think of as "Playing Dress-up with Friends".  Ever since our magazine feature, I've been wanting to put together some photos to highlight one of my favorite local shops, a Flax, linen, etc. consignment shop called Dinosaur Dry Goods. My friend, Bird,...

Featured in Central New York Magazine

Back in July we did some scrambling to get ready for a day-long interview and photo shoot with a local magazine. The issue made it to stands this month and we're loving the way that journalist, Allison Sklaney, and photographer, Ellen Blalock took our raw material and turned it into a really nice story about who we are and what we do. Locals might like to pick up a copy of Central New York...

Middle English

A few weeks ago, a request came in on our Facebook page for a few photos of our Middle English style on a woman.  It was exactly the reminder we needed to get back into taking regular photos of our shoes outside of the shop and on people's feet!  Here are a few from this snowy April Saturday in Aurora.

We're on Etsy's Home Page!

We are always flattered to be included in Etsy treasuries.  It's so much fun to see the different ways that fellow artisans put looks and ideas together.  From furniture to jewelry, we get paired with a lot and we love the different combinations.

With that being said, I did not expect to see our shoes front and center on the Etsy home page when I visited the site on a whim tonight. I was planning...

A Letter Worth Sharing

Dave shared this sweet message on our Facebook page today and I wanted to share it here as well.  These are the kinds of letters that reaffirm everything we do.  Thank you to Julie, and everyone else who takes a moment to write.  We appreciate letters like this so much.

Hi there -

I bought a pair of your New Chinese shoes back in 1995 and I am wearing them right now! :) They still look and feel...

Leather Sandals, 16 Years Later...

Jessica S. shared this photo and message with us.

I got these sandals as a graduation present... in 1996 (eek). I love these shoes & they're the only pair of shoes that have stuck by me in life. I finally admitted that it was time for a new pair to get me through th next 16 years. I'm not sure what to do with the old ones though - maybe I'll bronze them or pass them down to my grandchildren some...

Do you Pin?

Pinterest, like most new techie developments, can either be a great tool or a huge time suck.  I know that the whole concept is controversial, especially within the handmade community, so I'm wondering, do you use and support Pinterest?  If not, what is keeping you from taking part?

Wedding Shoes

I have been holding on to this little gem of a postcard for at least a couple of years now, waiting for a good time to share it.  Today being the first day of June (wedding season?) I pulled it out and popped it into the scanner.

I found the postcard at a local shop that carries local art and antiques.  The photographer, Jacci, was happy to give me a copy. She took the photo in the mid 1990s....

Handmade Love: Wolfie and the Sneak Fabric on Spoonflower

This is just to say that I LOVE my handmade and artist designed wolfie and the sneakdress. Check her fabric designs on Spoonflower. Renee's designs are funky and fun, and the organic knit has a nice weight and drape. She sent me this dress just because we were Twitter friends and when she tweeted about sharing some sample garments, I was fast enough to say, "I'll take it!". Sharing for the sake of...

Plain T-shirt Love

Style

I'd like to think that if these stylish ladies knew about our shoes they'd be wearing them.  What do you think?

Middle English Style

We're slowly building a collection of photos so that we can update our website and create a small catalog.  Yesterday I called up a friend and we orchestrated an impromptu photo shoot with her handsome and willing husband.  Below is a small sampling of my favorites from the day.  The first few include a new pair of brown Middle Englishand the last was taken with his own comfy and well worn black...

A Handmade Collection

Do you follow Kirtsy.com?  Founded by a few big name female bloggers, Kirtsy has recently become a collection of curated slideshows focused on art, design and interesting products, curated by some of the "most interesting people online".   Yesterday they posted our slideshow of fall inspired handmade goods.  It's a great collection of handmade items and I hope you'll check it out.

A Fresh Perspective

It's been a couple of months since I first talked with Erin about capturing some images of our shoes.  Up until now, most of the photos you see on our blog and website have been taken by family members or myself.  Tired of trying to do it all, we reached out to Erin, who is a professional phtographer and self professed Aurora Shoe lover.

I've been waiting in quiet anticipation since then and was...
